ORNITH. Genre d'oiseau palmipède de la famille des phalacrocoracidés, proche des fous et des cormorans, surnommé oiseau-serpent à cause de son cou long et souple qui seul émerge lorsqu'il nage, et qui vit au bord des eaux douces des régions tropicales :

PRONONC. ET ORTH. — Seule transcription ds LAND. 1834 : a-nein-ga. — Rem. BESCH. 1845 emploie comme vedette la forme anhinge.
ÉTYMOL. ET HIST. — 1775 (VALMONT DE BOMARE, Dict. raisonné universel d'hist. naturelle, Paris, 1775, t. 1 : L'anhinga est d'un genre particulier : les quatre doigts de chaque patte tiennent ensemble par une membrane commune. Son bec est droit et dentelé comme une scie).
Empr. au tupi anhinga ornith. (cf. FRIED. 1960); le port. n'a pu servir d'intermédiaire, ne datant que de 1871 (MACH. t. 1 1967).
